To be an effective leader, you need to think like a leader. But what does that even mean?
Successful leaders tend to share habits of thought that set them apart. While these patterns have many elements, they’re grounded in an understanding of the power of thought. Everything we think, like everything we do, has consequences. Positive thoughts grow into positive attitudes that in turn grow into positive outcomes–and negative thoughts do the same in the other direction. As the saying goes, we become what we think.
Successful leaders understand this principle well, and they express it in specific highly disciplined ways. Here are some examples:
1. Instead of thinking only of themselves, they include others.
While most people express their hopes and aspirations in terms like “I hope I get” or “I want to do,” successful leaders understand that it’s we before I and us before me. Their team, the people they lead, are at the forefront.

I’m guessing that, by now, you’ve done a deep dive into your email account settings. You know all the filtering and labeling tricks. But those email hacks usually just organize you. They don’t do a ton to limit how many legitimate emails you get every day. For that, you have to lay some ground rules that have nothing to do with checking or unchecking a box.

They are both enormous fucking piece of shitarians. This email could literally be 95,000 words long with addendum’s and video attachments and a host of recently printed articles from industry leaders world wide. But I’ll spare you the reading. As our employee manual now states – “work place harassment is like cancer, no one wants it anywhere near their life.” As a dude who’s been working in the restaurant industry for 4 decades now, I’ve seen and heard and witnessed a lot of really messed up stuff in the many kitchens I’ve worked in. In our own company, we’ve had men working for us be inappropriate with women. We’ve had women working for us be inappropriate with men. It doesn’t always start and stop with alcohol and sex and inappropriate comments and innuendos. It goes way past #metoo and long into #WTF. it is unconscionable for me to imagine that an employee working in this company in any capacity, could experience work place harassment – at any level. And in this day and age, with all the floodlights focused on these issues, it’s of paramount importance that we address this, and be critically aware of what we are doing. This is like the public service announcement at the airport warning you to tell authorities if anyone approaches you suspiciously. It takes a village to protect the children. Nothing goes unaddressed in this area of our roles and responsibilities. The list is long… [ Read More ]

How to Hack Stress 1. Lose Control It’s the things that we cannot control that stress many of us out more than anything else. Control is safe, control is comfortable, control allows us to know exactly what will happen where, when and how. But here’s the hard fact: there is so much out there that’s out of our control. How can we make peace with that? It’s simple: rewire your brain. When things don’t go as planned, our brain releases cortisol, the stress hormone. This causes our bodies to respond reactively. It makes us feel panicked and unsafe. With practice, we can train our brains to know that everything is going to be okay when things don’t go our way. This will in time, create new neural pathways to replace the old cortisol circuits. How to Rewire Your Brain: #1 Do the opposite of what you would normally do If you need to make your bed and organize everything neatly before you leave the house in the morning, let it grow messier by the day instead. Cook dinner without a recipe or switch out random ingredients. Color outside the lines, complete your tasks out of order, throw all the rules you used to follow out the window. If you’re someone who likes order in your life, you’ll soon see that there’s beauty in the chaos. Bonus: Understanding the 5 factors of your personality can help you identify trends in your behavior. #2 Take down the clock… [ Read More ]

Beginning on August 10, 2016, Colorado employers will be relieved of the additional state verification and retention obligations related to the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Since January 1, 2007, Colorado employers have been required to verify the work authorization of all newly hired employees—in essence, comply with federal I-9 requirements. However, Colorado added requirements on top of those for the Form I-9: the completion and retention of a written or electronic version of an entirely separate affirmation form, and retention of copies of the identity and work authorization documents presented by the employee during the I-9 process. More than 200 employers have been subject to fines under the law and more than 7,000 random audits were conducted. The law called for fines between $5,000 and $25,000. House Bill 16-1114, signed into law by Governor John Hickenlooper, eliminates the additional verification and retention obligations for Colorado employers. Employers in Colorado can take the following steps to prepare for the upcoming change in the law: Continue to complete the affirmation form and retain documents as required by the law for all newly hired employees until August 10, 2016. Create a plan to phase out the use of the affirmation form. Assess and decide whether to continue to keep copies of I-9 identity and work authorization documents after August 10, 2016, or whether to stop since it is no longer required by law. It may be necessary to consult counsel about the advantages and… [ Read More ]

BULLETIN 16-04 REFERENCE: VALID TEMPORARY DRIVER’S LICENSES April 21, 2016 Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division Recently, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles changed the look on new driver’s licenses issued in Colorado to incorporate new security features and there have been several media campaigns aimed at providing information to the public about the new licenses. To find out more information about the new driver’s licenses, click here. When a person applies for a new or renewal driver’s license, their old driver’s license is voided and the applicant is provided with a temporary license to use while the permanent license is produced and mailed to the applicant. Previously, this temporary license was a sheet of paper with the person’s information, which acted as a valid driver’s license as long as it was presented with their recently voided license. Under the new change, instead of receiving a sheet of paper with the person’s information, the applicant receives a grayscale version of the actual license to be issued. The new grayscale temporary license by itself is not valid unless presented with the voided license, just as before. Regulation 47-912(A) states (emphasis added): Licensees may refuse to sell alcohol beverages to any person unable to produce adequate, currently valid identification of age. As long as it contains a picture and date of birth, the kind and type of identification deemed adequate shall be limited to the following: Therefore, in order to be compliant… [ Read More ]

by Jon Katzenbach, Carolin Oelschlegel, and James Thomas Every organization has people who influence and energize others without relying on their title or formal position in the hierarchy to do so. We call them “authentic informal leaders.” They are a powerful resource in spreading a critical few behaviors from the bottom up. Among the many types of informal leaders present in organizations, the following are seen most frequently. Pride builders are master motivators of other people, and catalysts for improvement around them. Often found in the role of line manager, they understand the motivations of those with whom they work. They know how to foster a sense of excellence among others. They can be found at every level of a hierarchy; some of the most effective pride builders are close to the front line, where they can interact directly with customers as well as employees. Pride builders often have powerful insights about the culture and about what behaviors are likely to lead to improvement. Exemplars are role models. They bring vital behaviors or skills to life, and others pay attention to them. They are well respected and are effective peer influencers in the middle and senior management cohorts. Networkers are hubs of personal communication within the organization. They know many people, and communicate freely and openly with them. They serve as links among people who might not otherwise share information or ideas. If you want to see an idea… [ Read More ]
